Maricopa County Jail Roster Overview
MCSO is the fourth largest sheriff's office in the country. The agency operates five active jail facilities and one Intake, Transfer and Release (ITR) center. The 512 Facility was built in 2020 but is not yet fully operational and is used by ITR for intake overflow. The main MCSO office is at 550 West Jackson, Phoenix, Arizona 85003, and the main phone line is 602-876-1000. Sheriff Jerry Sheridan leads the agency in 2025. The jail roster portal is updated as new bookings move through ITR, and a person typically appears on the roster after intake processing is complete.
The roster shows only people held in MCSO custody. It will not show people held by city police lockups before transfer to MCSO. It will not show state-sentenced inmates in Arizona prisons. It will also not show people held in federal custody under ICE or the U.S. Marshals Service. For those records, use the released inmates page, which links out to the state and federal locators.
Bookings are heavy. In 2023, MCSO booked 81,677 people and released 81,739. The average daily jail population that year was 6,780. About 85% of inmates are male and 15% female. These numbers come from the county's 2024 Public Safety Services and Funding report.
How to Use the Roster
The MCSO Inmate Information search lives at mcso.org/InmateInfo. The page has two tabs. One is a direct booking-number lookup. The other is a name and date-of-birth lookup. Both return data on people still in MCSO custody at one of the county jails.
- Open the MCSO Inmate Information portal at mcso.org/InmateInfo.
- Pick the right tab. Choose "Search by Booking Number" if a booking number is known. Choose "Search by Name & Dob" if only the inmate's name and date of birth are known.
- Enter the data. For booking, type the full booking number. For name search, type the exact last name, exact first name, and date of birth as YYYYMMDD with no slashes.
- Submit the search. Results load on the same page when a match is found.
- Click the matching record to view housing, charges, and booking detail.
- If nothing comes up, call MCSO jail information at 602-876-0322 to confirm custody status.
The MCSO Inmate Information page lists the search fields in a tab layout, and the format notes are clear from the live portal. The screenshot below comes from mcso.org/InmateInfo.

The screen shows the two-tab interface and the four input fields the public can use to find a Maricopa County inmate in custody. The agency states that information on the site should not be relied on for legal action and that names and dates of birth may not match real identity in every case.
Note: The MCSO page warns that data may not be current, accurate, or complete, and that true identity can only be confirmed through fingerprint comparison.
Inmate Search Fields
The MCSO Inmate Information tool uses a short field list. The form is split into two tabs so the user does not have to fill out every box. Below is the field inventory pulled from the live portal.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Search by Booking Number | Tab | n/a | Direct lookup by booking number. |
| Enter Booking Number | Text | Yes for booking search | Enter the inmate's booking number to go directly to inmate information. |
| Search by Name & Dob | Tab | n/a | Direct lookup by last name, first name, and date of birth. |
| Last Name | Text | Yes for name search | Exact last name recommended. |
| First Name | Text | Yes for name search | Exact first name recommended. |
| Date of Birth | Text | Yes for name search | Format YYYYMMDD with no slashes. |
The booking-number path is the fastest. A booking number is given at intake at ITR and stays with the case file. Family members who picked up a booking number from a court hearing or a defense attorney should use that tab first.
What an Inmate Profile Shows
The MCSO search returns booking and custody data tied to one person. The public page lists the fields below as the standard outputs of an inmate record in the MCSO system. Charges, bond, and housing can change day to day as the case moves through court.
| Field | What It Shows |
|---|---|
| Booking Number | The unique number assigned at ITR intake. Use it for all later searches and bond payments. |
| Name | Last name and first name as recorded at booking. May not match true identity. |
| Date of Birth | Booking-recorded DOB. Used to tell people apart with shared names. |
| Custody Status | In custody, released, or transferred. The roster lists current MCSO custody only. |
| Housing Location | The jail facility holding the inmate, such as 4th Avenue, Lower Buckeye, Towers, Estrella, or Watkins. |
| Charges | Booking charges as listed by the arresting agency. These can change after the prosecutor's review. |
| Bond or Release Conditions | Bond amount or release terms set at initial appearance. Bond can be paid through the issuing court. |
| Booking Detail | Date and time of booking, arresting agency, and any holds. |
The MCSO disclaimers note that names can be false and that some persons may use false ID. Family who need to confirm an exact match should call the jail information line at 602-876-0322 or visit the booking desk in person.
MCSO Jail Facilities
MCSO houses inmates across five operational jails plus the ITR intake center. The downtown Phoenix campus holds the 4th Avenue Jail, while the Durango campus on the west side holds ITR, Watkins, Estrella, Towers, and Lower Buckeye. Phone for all jail information is 602-876-0322. Each facility has its own gender housing and program mix. The public-safety report puts Lower Buckeye Jail at 670,237 square feet, the largest detention facility in Arizona.

Durango Jail in the older county records was part of the Durango campus, and many Durango buildings are now near the end of their useful life. The Jail System Master Plan released in 2024 covers renovation, demolition, repurposing, and new construction over a 15-year window. The screenshot below is from maricopa.gov.

The plan lays out current and projected bed need by type and is the best source for facility planning data on the Maricopa County jail system.
Watkins Jail is the fifth active facility at 2680 South 28th Drive, Phoenix, AZ 85009, with capacity 1,600 and a 2023 ADP of 1,355. ITR at 2670 S 28th Drive handles all intake at capacity 573. For full population data and bed-type planning, see inmate population.
Booking Process
All arrestees in Maricopa County come into MCSO custody through one door. That door is ITR. The 2024 Public Safety report lists the steps in order. Arrival can follow a law-enforcement arrest, a court remand from Superior, Justice, or City court, or a self-surrender.
- Arrival at ITR after arrest, remand, or self-surrender.
- Search by detention staff.
- Health screening done on intake.
- Mugshot photo taken.
- Fingerprints recorded for ID confirmation.
- Initial appearance before a judicial officer.
- Court releases the person, or remands to custody.
- If remanded, classification and assignment to a jail facility.
Health staff from Correctional Health Services do a complete health assessment within 14 days under NCCHC standards. After classification, the inmate moves from ITR to the housing facility that fits gender, security level, and program need. Booking charges are listed on the roster, but the County Attorney can change charges after review. To track the case in court after booking, use the court records portal.
Note: Initial appearance happens within 24 hours of booking, and release conditions or bond can be set at that hearing before the person leaves custody.
Visitation Hours
MCSO supports both in-person visits and video visits from home through the GTL/GettingOut platform. Each facility sets its own block-by-block schedule and inmates are slotted in based on housing unit. Exact times must be confirmed with the housing facility before a visit. The table below is a general weekly window pattern used by the larger MCSO facilities. Specific blocks rotate by pod and program need.
| Day | Hours | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Video (Visit Now on Demand) |
| Tuesday | 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Video / scheduled in-person |
| Wednesday | 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Video / scheduled in-person |
| Thursday | 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Video / scheduled in-person |
| Friday | 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Video / scheduled in-person |
| Saturday | 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Video / scheduled in-person |
| Sunday | 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. | Video / scheduled in-person |
Video visits run through the GettingOut app and the GettingOut web site. Inmates use tablets in their housing unit. Free time slots may be limited based on unit demand. Family members who want a paid video visit set up an account, add funds, and book the visit by inmate name or booking number.
Confirmed communication resources from MCSO navigation include Inmate Visitation, MCSO Video Visitation Rules, Video Visitation Suspension Appeal, Inmate Telephone System, Inmate Tablets, and Contact an Inmate. Each page on the MCSO site spells out the rules for that channel. Visits can be suspended for rule breaks, and an appeal process exists for suspended visitors.
Mail Rules
MCSO routes inmate mail through the Contact an Inmate process listed on its public site. Mail to a booked person should use the inmate's full legal name and booking number on the outside of the envelope. The mail center screens incoming mail for contraband. Items that look like cash, drugs, or hidden notes can be denied and returned.
Tablet messaging through GettingOut is the faster way to reach an inmate. The tablet supports messages, photo sharing, and multimedia content. Family create a GettingOut account, fund the account, and the inmate uses the unit tablet to read and reply. Send paper mail only when the tablet channel is not an option for the family or the inmate.
Note: Cash should never be mailed to an inmate. Money for an inmate account is added through TouchPay by phone, online, retail, or jail kiosk.
Money Deposits
MCSO uses TouchPay for all inmate account deposits. Four methods are listed by the agency. Deposits use the inmate name or booking number. Fees vary by method. Cash kiosks at jails and the District I substation in Mesa give the fastest path to a same-day deposit.
| Method | How | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Telephone | Call 1-866-355-9593 | Fees apply. |
| Online | TouchPay website | Fees apply. |
| Retail locations | Use TouchPay locator | Fees apply; locations vary by ZIP code. |
| Cash kiosks | At jail facilities and District I substation, 1840 South Lewis Street, Mesa, AZ 85210 | Cash, Visa, MasterCard. Funds usually available within one hour after verification. |
Tablet funding is a separate stream. GettingOut accepts deposits online, by mobile app, or by phone at 866-516-0115. Tablet funds pay for phone calls, paid video visits, messages, photo sharing, and some multimedia content. The Public Safety report notes that inmates also get free access to more than 2,400 education, health, and behavioral courses through the assigned tablet.
Bond and Release
Bond is set by the court, not by the jail. Most bonds in Maricopa County are set at the initial appearance held shortly after booking. If a bond is posted, the issuing court records the payment, then MCSO processes the release. Detention officers verify the release order, run a wants-and-warrants check, and verify identity before letting the person leave.
The Criminal Department of the Superior Court lists a "How to Pay Criminal Bonds" page in its quick links. Property pickup at release uses a location given by the inmate. The person picking up property must show a current valid government-issued picture ID. Money release requests after 72 hours in custody need approval from the Jail Commander or designee. For background on the underlying charges, see criminal records. If a warrant is the reason the person is in custody, see warrant records.
Note: A bond payment posts to the court first, and the release order then routes to MCSO, so same-day release can still take several hours to process.
Federal Inmates and Released Inmates
The MCSO roster does not show federal custody. Federal pretrial holds in the Phoenix area may sit in MCSO under contract, but post-conviction federal inmates serve at Bureau of Prisons sites. The BOP runs a separate inmate locator covering federal inmates from 1982 to present. The federal locator may not be current after First Step Act recalculations. A "Released" or "Not in BOP custody" result does not always rule out another custody or supervision status.
State-sentenced inmates in Arizona prisons are tracked by the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry public inmate data search. The public-safety budget tied to MCSO operations is set out in the county's funding report. The screenshot below is from maricopa.gov.

The county report puts MCSO's Detention Fund at $276.55M, which is 55% of the agency's FY2023 detention and patrol budget of $504.7M. For a deeper view of who has been released and when, see released inmates. The released-inmates page covers VINELink alerts, the state DOC locator, the BOP locator, and the Arizona DPS Sex Offender Registry, all of which sit outside the MCSO roster.
MCSO's main public-facing landing is the official agency home page. The screenshot below is from mcso.org.

The page lists the Custody Bureau, Inmate Information, jail facility pages, and the Contact an Inmate process under one menu.
